Introduction to Planetary Health Speaker Series.

Many people have expressed their concern for a lack of sufficient climate change education.  With our ‘Planetary Health Speaker Series,’ you will have the opportunity to learn all the FACTS about climate change and planetary health by professionals in the field. Each speaker presentation will be followed by a discussion of climate change and how to reorient the world towards prioritizing planetary health.

First Speaker Presentation.

This presentation will discuss the carbon pricing policies (i.e. carbon taxes, cap-and-trade systems etc.) in place in Canada, the health implications of these policies, and the role of public health in the climate policy space.

Rachel Kirkland is a Master of Public Health student in the Social and Behavioural Health Sciences stream at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health (University of Toronto) where she specializes in public health policy and global health. She has worked for Health Action International, researching access to medicines policy in the Pacific Rim, and for the Wellesley Institute, using a social determinants of health approach to examine child and youth health issues for marginalized communities in Ontario. Currently, she works as a junior policy analyst in the Bilateral Engagement, Summits, and Trade Division at the Office of International Affairs for the Health Portfolio in Ottawa, focusing on Canada’s bilateral health policy with Eurasia. Rachel is passionate about addressing the health equity implications of declining planetary health, the state of human health in the context of global sustainability. Her recent work has focused on understanding the links between health and climate change, from both the Canadian and global perspective, and the role of health in climate policy.

Meeting Agenda:
